Rich in history and securely in the heart of the Maine coast, this bell commemorates the deep spirit of past wartime defense in the Revolutionary War. Since 1942 it is home to the proud Maine Maritime Academy. From Whaling ships entering Greenport to the fleet of "bunker boats" fishing for menhaden, Long Island has always been a haven for sailors and fishermen. The clarion tones of the Long Island Bell represent the safe harbor remembered and sought during watery voyages. Surfcasting, beach combing and beautiful sunrises belie the treacherous fury the Atlantic Ocean can visit upon the Outer Banks. The hardy people on these tenuous strips of land depend on bell buoys to safeguard their way through inlets and dangerous shoals.
